Metro Line 2B & Line 9 Open: A New Chapter for BKC Commuters

There is a particular quality to the light over Mumbai on the morning a new metro line opens — a sense that the city, ever restless, has quietly rearranged itself overnight. On 7 April 2026, that feeling was made literal. Both corridors commenced commercial operations a day after their inauguration by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, at separate events in Dahisar and Chembur. For a city whose relationship with distance has long been defined by the patience of its commuters, this was no small ceremony.

The first of the two, Metro Line 2B, arrived with quiet historic weight. The Line 2B will provide the first metro connectivity on the Harbour Line in Mumbai. The 5.53-km Phase 1 of Metro Line 2B has five stations, including Deshbhakt N G Acharya Udyan (Diamond Garden), Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk, Deonar, Mankhurd and Maharashtra Nagar–Mandale. Metro Line 2B (Phase 1) services commenced at 6 am and will run till around 10.30 pm at intervals of approximately nine-and-a-half minutes, operating 209 services daily, according to officials. For residents of Chembur and Mankhurd, long reliant on congested arterial roads to reach the Harbour Line or the highway, this stretch offers something the neighbourhood has waited years for.

Alongside it, Metro Line 9 extended the network's reach in the opposite direction, toward Mumbai's northern edge. The 5.6-km elevated Phase 1 stretch of Metro Line 9 comprises four stations — Dahisar East, Pandurangwadi, Miragaon and Kashigaon. Its significance lies less in its own length than in what it connects to: MMRDA said the integration of Line 7 with Line 9 enables direct connectivity from Andheri East to Mira-Bhayandar, while Lines 2A and 7 will function as separate corridors. With the inauguration of Line 9, Metro Line 2A will now operate as a standalone corridor between Andheri West and Dahisar East, with services from 5.50 am till around 11 pm and a peak frequency of about six minutes, while the integrated Line 7-9 corridor, spanning 19.79 km, will operate from 5.50 am to 11 pm, with a peak frequency of under six minutes and 276 services on weekdays.

What makes this moment more than a routine expansion is the scale it represents for the city as a whole. Mumbai crossed a significant milestone in April 2026, with the launch of two new corridors taking the city's operational metro network past 100 kilometres, making it the second city in India after Delhi to achieve that scale. It is worth remembering that Line 2B is, for now, only a fragment of a larger ambition. The first phase of Metro Line 2B connects DN Nagar in western Mumbai to Mandale, but the full 23.6-kilometre corridor, when completed, will feature 20 stations, further integrating Mumbai's transport infrastructure. This route is designed to enhance east-west connectivity by linking important areas such as Andheri West, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Kurla, and Chembur with the eastern suburbs.

The missing middle of that vision is not far off. The western portion of Line 2B, connecting DN Nagar to Khar, is expected to become operational by mid-2026, which will eventually create an east-west corridor running from Andheri West through Bandra and BKC to Mandale. Until that link closes the loop, BKC's own metro access continues to come via the Aqua Line — the corridor that first placed the financial district on Mumbai's underground map. On 5 October 2024, the 12 km underground BKC to Aarey Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road section of the Aqua Line 3 was inaugurated. When Line 2B's central stretch through BKC does open, the district will sit at the intersection of two metro lines rather than one — a rare position for any business hub in the city.

MMRDA's own projections suggest the impact will be felt well beyond the trains themselves. Officials note that the corridor shall reduce the current travel time by anything between 50% and 75% depending on road conditions. It shall provide connectivity between the Eastern and Western Suburban Mumbai, and rail-based access to the commercial, government bodies and geographical landmarks in the city. For someone commuting from Mankhurd to a BKC office today, that is not an abstract statistic — it is the difference between an hour lost to traffic on the Sion-Panvel highway and a metro ride measured in minutes.

The ripple effects on housing demand along these corridors are already being discussed by analysts and brokers alike. Due to enhanced transportation options, areas near major business districts such as Bandra Kurla Complex may experience a surge in demand, with the rise in interest for commercial and residential properties potentially leading to more mixed-use development. This is precisely the corridor where Godrej Properties has been building steadily for years — from the established residential clusters of Vikhroli East to newer addresses rising in Chembur, both now edging closer to BKC in travel time than they have ever been on paper. As the western half of Line 2B inches toward completion and the eastern suburbs gain their long-awaited Harbour Line metro link, the geography of convenient living in Mumbai is being quietly, permanently redrawn.
