Borivali-Thane Twin Tunnel

The Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel connects Thane and Borivali through a road link running beneath Sanjay Gandhi National Park, marking a watershed moment in Mumbai's infrastructure narrative. The project's foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Modi on July 13, 2024, signalling serious intent behind what many consider transformative urban connectivity.

The project consists of a twin-tube road tunnel linking Ghodbunder Road in Thane with the Western Express Highway in Borivali, with a project length expected to be about 11.84 km. The road will have two tunnels of diameter 12.2 meters each and the tunnels will be of a length of 10.25 kms, with each tunnel having 2 lanes and 1 emergency lane. This engineering approach ensures redundancy and safety while maximizing traffic throughput across this critical corridor.

The scale of transformation cannot be overstated. The Thane Borivali Tunnel is planned to cut the travel duration from 1-2 hours to 15-20 minutes. For the millions of commuters who navigate this corridor daily—whether for work, commerce, or leisure—this represents a profound quality-of-life improvement. Between Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road and Ghodbunder Road, a distance of around 20 km, there is no east-west connecting road due to the presence of the SGNP, making this project a long-overdue solution to a critical infrastructure gap.

Environmental stewardship sits at the heart of this project's design. The machines will go 25 metres underground, a depth which will not cause any harm to flora and fauna, MMRDA officials say. It is considered the first instance of tunnels being dug under an environmentally protected area anywhere in India, setting a precedent for balancing development with conservation.

The benefits extend beyond convenience. Once the Thane Borivali Tunnel project is completed, it will help in reducing fuel consumption by 10.5 lakh metric tonnes and reduce 36 percent of carbon dioxide emissions. Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd. (MEIL) was declared as the preferred bidder for both packages, bringing proven expertise to the execution. The project's construction period is estimated at five years, positioning completion within the coming half-decade.
